Learning for life

Wellington East Girls’ College is a state secondary school, situated in Mount Victoria, Wellington with just over 900 students, mainly from the eastern and southern suburbs of Wellington. Teaching methods are based on recent research findings about learning. We offer a broad curriculum with opportunities to achieve in many academic subjects, in performing and visual arts, in sport and in personal and social growth. We aim to be a community of learners - teachers and parents as well as students. Our academic outcomes are extremely good.

Overlooking the heart of Wellington city and harbour, the College is close to universities and to Wellington International Airport. The school complex set in gardens and has a wide range of modern facilities in addition to its numerous well-equipped classrooms. These include a music suite, a drama suite, computer rooms, a technology suite, six science laboratories, seminar rooms, art and photography rooms, a great library service and a large assembly hall. Sports facilities include a sports field, netball, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pool and two modern gymnasia.

Involvement and excitement
There is such a lot to do at East! So many sports to choose from, several choirs, debating, dramatic productions, cultural groups, orchestra, rock groups, elective classes, school council, school committees, voluntary groups - it's a busy place!

The College encourages girls to set high personal goals and to value learning, leading to distinguished performance in external examinations and at university. Academic achievements put Wellington East Girls' College near to the top of the tables of high schools in Wellington. A wide range of subjects is offered across all disciplines, including Mathematics and Sciences, Languages and English, Art, Design, Graphics and Photography, Social Sciences, Commerce, Technology, Music, Drama and Physical Education along with practical subjects. The college is known for its particular strengths in Art, Design and Music.

Extracurricular Programme
Almost every sport, from tennis to indoor basketball can be played. Young Enterprise operates for girls to gain practical business experience. Drama productions, musical productions, computer clubs, debating, cultural groups and social services are also catered for. There are three excellent choirs, an orchestra, a rock band and chamber music groups. Music is a strong feature of this college.

English Language Support
Intensive ESOL tuition by experienced qualified staff is available at all levels. In class support is provided in mainstream classes with specialist vocabularies. At Years 12 and 13 students work towards gaining the English language entry requirements for university.
